Guanacaste has its own media that closely follow what happens in each canton: water, tourism, local governments and community life. This guide presents the province’s newspapers, digital outlets and radio stations that we verified in the directory of Guanacaste media, with what each says about itself on its official site.
Newspapers
La Voz de Guanacaste
La Voz de Guanacaste was born in 2002 as La Voz de Nosara, a printed newsletter with local news. In 2006 John and Susan Johnson bought it to keep it from closing, in 2010 it began covering neighboring communities, and in 2013 it adopted its current name to serve the whole province.
It presents itself as Costa Rica’s first bilingual, nonprofit outlet, and highlights its investigative unit, which uses data journalism to examine how public money is spent on municipal purchases and contracts. It is the choice for readers looking for regional investigative reporting, and also for those who prefer to read in English.
Periódico Mensaje
Periódico Mensaje has published news from Guanacaste and Costa Rica since 1950, according to its own site, which makes it one of the province’s longest-running outlets. It keeps a print edition, which can be read on its site, alongside sections on tourism and business, culture, education, sustainability, health and sports.
Guanacaste a la Altura
Guanacaste a la Altura is published by the company Cañas al Día S.A. and has more than 28 years of history. It comes out monthly in a “print-digital edition” and organizes its news by canton, such as Liberia, Nicoya or Bagaces. Its stated focus is reporting on what contributes to the province’s economic and social growth.
Digital media
Guananoticias
Guananoticias publishes daily crime, politics, health, sports, tourism, environment and community news from across the province. It is a good source for quickly finding out what is happening in cantons such as Liberia, Santa Cruz or Nandayure.
Noticias Guanacaste
Noticias Guanacaste combines provincial and national news with stories on tourism, nature and Guanacaste culture. It also runs NG Radio, a live stream with news and music 24 hours a day, and broadcasts live on Facebook.
Radio
Guanacaste FM
Guanacaste FM calls itself “the voice and sound of the province”. It is an independent community radio station with studios in Tierra Blanca de Liberia, and you can listen live on its site and on online radio apps.
NG Radio, from Noticias Guanacaste, also streams online 24 hours a day.

For businesses and organizations
If your news or your business is in Guanacaste, the province’s media reach your audience directly. Before writing to them, read how to send a press release in Costa Rica, and if you plan to advertise, see how much advertising costs. Regional outlets don’t always publish their rates: ask them directly. Most publish in Spanish, except La Voz de Guanacaste, which also has an English edition.
Is a Guanacaste outlet missing? Write to hola@costaricamedios.cr with its official site; we add it after checking that it is active. See the full list in Guanacaste media.
